Royal Purple brings holiday cheer to Whitewater

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Royal Purple student newspaper marched in the City of Whitewater Holiday Parade of Lights Friday, Dec. 3 to celebrate the festive season with community members.

The team of 35 members handed out seasonal winter print issues of the newspaper full of their best feature stories while marching proudly with their organizational banner. The students donned bright red Santa hats and colorful holiday lightbulb necklaces while ringing bells to the beat of Christmas classic songs. The paper will put out one last online issue Monday, Dec. 13 before the winter break and will resume weekly online publications Monday, Jan. 17 with the start of the spring semester. To view the latest online issue visit www.royalpurplenews.com.

Royal Purple puts out first print issue

The UW-Whitewater Royal Purple newspaper is putting out new issues online every Monday and quarterly seasonal issues. Watch for 5,000 newspapers popping up this week in over 75 locations around campus, the city of Whitewater and at the Rock County extension! The print issue contains our best feature stories and previews for fall events. Check http://www.royalpurplenews.com for weekly event coverage and breaking news! Plus the RP is also on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. There are so many ways to read the Royal Purple!

UW-Whitewater’s Royal Purple newspaper has print issues hot off the press ready for the first fall quarter. Managing Editor Dauntae Green and Campus News Editor Cennedy Hoppe worked up a sweat unloading the 5,000 issues that will be popping up around the campus and city this week.

Just 2 weeks left to register for KEMPA Summer Journalism Kamp!

As we turn the page on such a difficult year, we can start to plan for a return to some kind of normalcy.  I am hoping that KEMPA’s Journalism Kamp might be one more item to help your young journalists get excited about next year.

I am reaching out to you personally as KEMPA’s Journalism Kamp is the perfect opportunity for your young staff members.  The links below will provide more information, but I’ve outlined four ways that our camp could be just what your program needs right now.

1.  We are local!  While Illinois and Wisconsin seem to be opening up very quickly, travel could still be a concern for some families.  Taking place in the lovely town of Whitewater, this camp is close so no airline tickets or travel plans are needed.

2.  We are productive AND fun!  Young journalists will be learning from award-winning professionals and instructors in Broadcasting, Writers Circle, Sports Media and Photojournalism while working in state of the art facilities as they compete for the annual KEMPA Kup.  However, we balance work with fun as Kampers will also be going to the swimming pool, bowling lanes, gyms and movie theater.

3.  We are a great value!  Young reporters and their families can rest easy knowing that they are going to be safe and cared for during their four days at the KEMPA Kamp.  Receiving such a robust program at such a great rate is a great value.  Four days of learning, laughing, and working with peers from across our area is priceless.

4.  We are a jump start! The young staffers from your publications will return to your schools energized and ready to contribute.  Kamp attendees will be ready to help lead your program in new ways as we all work to return to school this fall.

WE ARE HOPING TO CONTINUE FILLING OUR KAMP ROSTER THROUGH JULY 1ST.

WON’T YOU PLEASE ENCOURAGE YOUR STAFF MEMBERS TO JOIN US?

Royal Purple wins WNA Awards

The Royal Purple newspaper at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater won second place for Best Newspaper Promotion at the 2020 Better Collegiate Newspaper Competition. The staff worked hard handing out papers every week, participating in campus events and engaging the community online.

Photo Editor Dane Sheehan also took second place for Best Sports Photography. Sheehan entered a stunning photo of a rain-drenched play during a Warhawk Football game this past fall against UW- Oshkosh.

The entire Royal Purple staff put their all into the publication of 24 issues throughout the 2019-20 academic year. Despite the publication schedule being cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the staff persevered with a final online issue April 20 to wrap up the year.
